“La setta” (Marsilio, 2022) by Camilla Läckberg and Henrik Fexeus is the second volume of the Mentalist Trilogy which the authors have dedicated to the discovery of what a sect is and what the psychological mechanisms that favor its formation are.
It is a compelling novel for the plot, but also for the attention that the authors dedicate to the personal history of the protagonists, making them all primary despite some having a more prominent role such as Mina and Vincent.
The disappearance and killing of some children sets in motion a system of reflection to prevent other children from being murdered in what appears to be the action of a serial killer or, perhaps, of several people controlled by a single mind.
There will be no shortage of twists, shocking and dangerous moments, in a competition between the police and the murderer that develops like a game of chess.
Obviously, nothing can be revealed about a narrative that must be followed piece by piece by readers who, thanks to Vincent, the mentalist, find themselves involved in the broom of the truth.
The involvement of the readers is perhaps the most original key to this novel which unfolds step by step with clear and explicit language also in the explanation of the details and clues that gradually reconstruct what is happening and why.
The ending, which completes the event, offers new elements that can suggest what the quest will be in the third and final volume of the trilogy.
“La setta” (Marsilio, 2022) by Camilla Läckberg and Henrik Fexeus is a novel that will certainly excite crime lovers, but which is also capable of involving readers who are more distant from this literary genre.
