“Il fumo” (Leone editore) is a short story by Luigi Pirandello written in 1904 in which the author describes the feelings of human beings, their contradictions and falls with irony and insight.
It is a story of relationships between human beings and how these can lead us to change ourselves due to discontent and the desire for revenge. At the same time, however, Pirandello manages to deal with a very current topic, the relationship between man and nature, and how unequal and often disrespectful this is, leading to the destruction of both.
The novella tells the story of Mattia Scala, a gentle and gentle man, who is repeatedly subjected to abuse by his antagonist, Dima Chiarenza, who is welcomed into his home by the former as if he were a son, but who then betrays him by abusing his welcome and robbing him of his sulfur first and earth secondly.
Mattia Scala, due to the loss of the sulfur mine, will also lose a son of whom nothing will be known again and will suffer from the death of his wife. He will try to create a new life for himself in the countryside and will appreciate the beauty of nature, falling in love with the earth and the clean landscapes in clear contrast to those disfigured and burned by sulfur extraction which enriches a few and strips everyone of the greatest good, nature.
With the desire to expand the beauty of the landscape around him, Mattia Scala sets aside some money to buy the land of one of his neighbors and his goal would almost be achieved if it weren’t for the death of the latter who left no document not only of the agreement made, but also of the economic investment that Scala had already undertaken to recover the land before it was even in his possession.
Dima Chiarenza, who has become a loan shark, will take advantage of this lack of documents to take possession of the land. Faced with the certainty that his enemy would become his neighbor and once again take advantage of him, Scala seems to go mad and makes a radical choice, to sell the land to the entrepreneurs of the sulfur mines so that everything is burned and ruined. A revenge that will lead to the destruction of what he loved most is also a punishment against himself, Scala knows this well, but now consumed by Chiarenza’s malice he sees only that possibility: revenge.
“Il fumo” (Leone editore) by Luigi Pirandello is an intense and significant novella which, behind the mask of irony, reveals the power and malaise of human beings who abandon themselves to hatred and the desire for possession.
