“Io sono vivo, voi siete morti” (Adelphi, 2022) di Emmanuel Carrère è la biografia di Philip K. Dick pubblicata per la prima volta nel 1993.
La nuova ristampa non indica che ci siano degli approfondimenti, ma solo che il testo ha un valore profondo che va oltre il tempo e gli ulteriori aggiornamenti presenti nelle varie biografie pubblicate su Philip K. Dick da altri autori in anni più recenti.
È con questo spirito che ho letto questa biografia che sembra un romanzo: non cercare di scoprire ulteriori elementi sulla vita di Dick, ma percepire quanto profonda sia stato il suo pensiero a prescindere dal genere della letteratura di fantascienza prescelto da Dick per esprimerlo.
Quello che resta nell’animo del lettore della biografia di Dick scritta da Carrère è la profonda umanità dello scrittore di fantascienza i cui romanzi non solo appaiono come vere e proprie distopie rivelando la grande abilità della lettura introspettiva della società che Dick rappresenta, ma anche la sua grande umanità.
Carrère mi sembra mettere in risalto tale umanità attraverso gli episodi salienti della vita dell’autore così come descritti dai suoi stessi romanzi confermando la perfetta coincidenza tra vita reale e immaginaria.
Così, la mancanza di comunicazione tra gli esseri umani, la loro incapacità di immaginare una vita diversa in cui siano espresse caratteristiche più profonde, la sua abilità nel descrivere il male e i nemici (spesso mostruosi, ma spesso uguali a noi stessi) rende più vicino questo autore di fantascienza, personaggio complesso per la vita personale e per le sue opere.
Sembra quasi di poter leggere nel testo di Carrère il suo amore sin dall’adolescenza per lo scrittore Dick e per il suo pensiero. In alcuni tratti sembra di potervi riconoscere lo stesso Carrère, quasi che il significato del libro fosse la consapevolezza di una doppia biografia se non negli eventi della vita, almeno in quelli del pensiero.
“Io sono vivo, voi siete morti” (Adelphi, 2022) di Emmanuel Carrère si legge come un romanzo scritto da mano competente e agile e coinvolgente. Lo consiglio sia a chi voglia conoscere Philip K. Dick, sia a chi voglia semplicemente lasciarsi trasportare da una storia bella e difficile come spesso le storie belle sono.

It is in this spirit that I read this biography which reads like a novel: not trying to discover further elements of Dick’s life, but perceiving how profound his thought was regardless of the genre of science fiction literature chosen by Dick to express it.
What remains in the soul of the reader of the biography of Dick written by Carrère is the profound humanity of the science fiction writer whose novels not only appear as real dystopias revealing the great ability of introspective reading of the society that Dick represents, but also the his great humanity.
Carrère seems to me to highlight this humanity through the salient episodes of the author’s life as described by his own novels, confirming the perfect coincidence between real and imaginary life.
Thus, the lack of communication between human beings, their inability to imagine a different life in which deeper characteristics are expressed, its ability to describe evil and enemies (often monstrous, but often the same as ourselves) brings closer this science fiction author, a complex character in his personal life and in his works.
It almost seems to be able to read in Carrère’s text his love of him since his adolescence for the writer Dick and for his thoughts. In some places it seems to be able to recognize Carrère himself, almost as if the meaning of the book were the awareness of a double biography if not in the events of life, at least in those of thought.
“Io sono vivo, voi siete morti” (Adelphi, 2022) by Emmanuel Carrère reads like a novel written by a competent and agile and engaging hand. I recommend it both to those who want to know Philip K. Dick, and to those who simply want to get carried away by a beautiful and difficult story as beautiful stories often are.
