“Eretiche, bisbetiche, profetiche. Le donne di William Shakespeare” (BUR, 2007) a cura di Nicola Fano, è un’interessante antologia che raccoglie alcune scene dalle principali opere di W. Shakespeare per illustrare il ruolo della protagonista femminile in ciascuna di esse.
L’antologia è introdotta da una esemplificativa e chiara introduzione a cura di Nicola Fano che guida verso una prospettiva di lettura e comprensione di tali personaggi femminili la cui funzione non è mai secondaria sebbene alle donne sembra assegnata una funzione ridotta rispetto a quella maschile.
Eppure, sono donne di “spessore” sia nel ruolo di vittime che in quello, come nel caso di Lady Macbeth, di istigatrici.
Nicola Fano spiega quanto di questa apparentente scarsità di femminile nelle opere shakeseriane sia dovuta, in realtà, al fatto che all’epoca non era consentito alle donne di recitare in teatro e questo significava che i ruoli femminili, interpretati da uomini, non coglievano mai fino in fondo l’essenza della donna tanto da poterla rappresentare in maniera completa.
L’autore dell’antologia, inoltre, si interroga su quali siano state le donne ispiratrici nella vita di Shakespeare e su quale modello di donna il grande Bardo possa aver raccontato per esprimere la sua lettura della realtà e il suo progetto di universalità delle emozioni.
Ogni scena desunta dalle diverse opere è poi preceduta da una breve ma significativa spiegazione che consente una maggiore comprensione di quello che si andrà leggendo.

The anthology is introduced by an exemplary and clear introduction by Nicola Fano which leads towards a perspective of reading and understanding these female characters whose function is never secondary although women seem assigned a reduced function compared to that of men.
Yet, they are women of “thickness” both in the role of victims and in that, as in the case of Lady Macbeth, of instigators.
Nicola Fano explains how much of this apparent scarcity of women in Shakespeare’s works is actually due to the fact that at the time women were not allowed to act in the theater and this meant that female roles, played by men, never caught up basically the essence of the woman so as to be able to represent her completely.
The author of the anthology also wonders about who were the inspirational women in Shakespeare’s life and what model of woman the great Bard may have told to express his reading of reality and his project of universality of emotions.
Each scene taken from the various works is then preceded by a brief but significant explanation which allows for a better understanding of what one will be reading.
