Ci sono autori della letteratura considerata “classica” che lasciano un segno profondo nel cuore dei lettori, ma di cui non sempre si conoscono aspetti salienti della vita che ne hanno permeato la scrittura.
Il libro di Paolo Gulisano, “Robert Louis Stevenson. L’avventura nel cuore” (Edizioni Ares, 2022), è uno di quei libri che fa chiarezza mettendo in luce la scrittura e la vita di uno di questi autori classici, nello specifico R.L. Stevenson.
Più che la biografia in quanto raccolta di eventi facenti parte la vita dell’autore preso in considerazione, quello che risalta in questo saggio del Gulisano, è la personalità e la formazione umana di un autore conosciuto soprattutto per i suoi libri di avventure (considerati, erroneamente, letteratura per ragazzi, come per esempio “L’isola del tesoro”), e per il suggestivo e inquietante “Lo strano caso del dottor Jekyll e del signor Hyde”.
In realtà, come ci dimostra il Gulisano in questo suo saggio, l’uomo Stevenson è molto più complesso e profondo di quello che si suole rappresentare nel “personaggio” Stevenson inteso come autore di libri di avventure sui mari.
Scopriamo, infatti, che la metafora del mare, del viaggio, dei pirati è la continua ricerca di sé stessi e anche della definizione di bene e male così come poi esploderà nel romanzo che narra la storia di Jekyll e Hyde.
Stevenson, sofferente di malattia respiratoria invalidante fin dall’infanzia, emerge come un uomo alla ricerca di un significato più alto della vita. Certamente influenzato dalla religiosità della sua tata e da quella dei genitori, fin dai suoi primi scritti Stevenson si rivela una persona alla ricerca di un significato della vita che superi il contingente, Così, ogni personaggio, diventa una tipologia di carattere e offre una prospettiva in senso evolutivo dello stesso.
Non solo i romanzi di avventura, ci dice il Gulisano, ma anche le fiabe e i romanzi storici pubblicati da Stevenson fanno di questo uomo uno scrittore da conoscere e la cui voce ascoltare e impiegare per riflettere.
“Robert Louis Stevenson. L’avventura nel cuore” (Edizioni Ares, 2022) di Paolo Gulisano è un ottimo libro per conoscere meglio R. L. Stevenson, ma che, soprattutto, lo presenta con una visone particolarmente originale e interessante.

More than the biography as a collection of events forming part of the life of the author under consideration, what stands out in this essay by Gulisano is the personality and human training of an author known above all for his adventure books (considered, mistakenly, children’s literature, such as “Treasure Island”), and for the suggestive and disturbing “The strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde”.
In reality, as Gulisano demonstrates in this essay of his, the man Stevenson is much more complex and profound than what is usually represented in the “character” Stevenson understood as the author of books of adventures on the seas.
In fact, we discover that the metaphor of the sea, of travel, of pirates is the continuous search for oneself and also for the definition of good and evil as it will later explode in the novel that tells the story of Jekyll and Hyde.
Stevenson, suffering from crippling respiratory disease since childhood, emerges as a man searching for a higher meaning in life. Certainly influenced by the religiosity of his nanny and that of his parents, from his first writings Stevenson reveals himself as a person in search of a meaning in life that goes beyond the contingent. Thus, each character becomes a typology of character and offers a perspective in evolutionary sense of it.
Not only the adventure novels, Gulisano tells us, but also the fairy tales and historical novels published by Stevenson make this man a writer to know and whose voice to listen to and use to reflect.
