“Le stelle di Kabul” (Piemme, 2022) è un romanzo di Nadia Hashimi di grande impatto emotivo.
La storia è ambientata tra Afghanistan e Stati Uniti a partire dal colpo di Stato del 1978, ricordato come la rivolta di Saur, che vide la distruzione del governo e l’avvento dei talebani.
È la storia di una sopravvissuta, Sitara, costretta ad assumere il nome della sorella morta, Aryana, che era nata in America, per poter abbandonare la sua terra natale e salvarsi grazie all’aiuto di un’ambasciatrice americana che la adotterà, ma grazie anche a uno dei soldati, Sahir, che la porterà fuori dal palazzo del potere gravemente assediato affidandola proprio a quella donna.
Eppure, Aryana/Sitara non sarà mai riconoscente a quel soldato, poiché lo ha visto accanto ai corpi dei suoi genitori e del fratellino di appena tre anni ed è sicura che sia lui ad averli uccisi. Spesso, però, ciò che appare può essere diverso da come la mente lo memorizza.
Aryana comincia la sua nuova vita in America, diventa oncologa, ma dentro di sé porta dubbi e sensi di colpa che non la liberano dalla sua storia. D’altra parte, lo stesso nome che le è stato consegnato, Aryana, significa “Afghanistan”, quasi a imprimere in lei il segno della sua appartenenza.
Come fare a liberarsi davvero del senso di colpa? Come ricostruire sul dolore consapevole? Tornare e riempire i vuoti, forse, ed è quello che Aryana proverà a fare.
In questo percorso a ritroso la donna sarà accompagnata dalla madre adottiva e da Clay, un giornalista americano molto critico sul comportamento degli Stati Uniti verso l’Afghanistan durante la Guerra Fredda; un comportamento, ritiene, pari e uguale a quello della Russia, una rivalità giocata sulla vita di una nazione povera e senza più punti di riferimento dove la violenza dilaga, le regole contro le donne diventano implacabili, il silenzio delle nazioni diventa strumento di ulteriore annientamento.
Molto interessante, quasi simbolica, è la professione di Aryana: è un’oncologa, destinata, quindi, a estirpare “il male” dal corpo fisico dei suoi pazienti senza poter dare loro la certezza della salvezza né essere in grado di annullare il dolore interiore della malattia.

The story is set between Afghanistan and the United States since the coup d’état of 1978, remembered as the Saur Revolt, which saw the destruction of the government and the advent of the Taliban.
It is the story of a survivor, Sitara, forced to assume the name of her dead sister, Aryana, who was born in America, in order to leave her native land and save herself thanks to the help of an American ambassador who will adopt her, but thanks also to one of the soldiers, Sahir, who will take her out of the seriously besieged palace of power, entrusting her to that very woman.
Yet, Aryana / Sitara will never be grateful to that soldier, as she has seen him next to the bodies of her parents and her three-year-old brother and is sure that he is the one who killed them. Often, however, what appears can be different from how the mind stores it.
Aryana begins her new life in America, becomes an oncologist, but inside she carries doubts and feelings of guilt that don’t free her from her story. On the other hand, the same name given to her, Aryana, means “Afghanistan”, as if to imprint on her the sign of belonging to her.
How do you really get rid of the guilt? How to rebuild on conscious pain? Come back and fill in the blanks, maybe, and that’s what Aryana will try to do.
In this journey back, the woman will be accompanied by her adoptive mother and by Clay, an American journalist very critical of the behavior of the United States towards Afghanistan during the Cold War; a behavior, she believes, equal and equal to that of Russia, a rivalry played on the life of a poor nation with no points of reference where violence is rampant, the rules against women become implacable, the silence of nations becomes an instrument of further annihilation .
Aryana’s profession is very interesting, almost symbolic: she is an oncologist, therefore destined to eradicate “evil” from the physical body of her patients without being able to give them the certainty of salvation nor be able to cancel the inner pain of the disease.
