“Wilson lo svitato” (El Doctor Sax, 2018) è un romanzo di Mark Twain pubblicato per la prima volta in volume nel 1894, tra il 1893-94 era stato pubblicato a puntate su una rivista.
Si tratta di un romanzo ambienato nell’800 nel quale l’autore mostra tutta la sua abilità letteraria caratterizzata dalla particolare ironia con la quale osserva il mondo che lo circonda e le sue incoerenze.
Il protagonista, Wilson, è soprannominato “lo svitato” a causa di una frase infelice che pronunciò in pubblico al suo arrivo a Dawson’s Landing. In realtà, il suo cognome è Davis ed è un sagace avvocato che dimostrerà tutta la sua abilità investigatoria e la sua intelligenza a dispetto del nomignolo affibbiatogli per pregiudizio. I pregiudizi, si sa, nascono spesso dall’ignoranza di chi li costruisce e prorio questo sembra essere il leitmotiv della narrazione.
Pur essendo il protagonista, Wilson nella narrazione sembra avere un ruolo limitato e sottomesso; solo nell’ultima parte gli sarà riconosciuto il merito per la sua intelligenza che si conquisterà nella ricerca della verità oltre il pregiudizio e ogni forma di sopruso.
Nella parte più ampia del romanzo, il ruolo di protagonisti sarà assunto da Roxana, una schiava di colore che scambierà nella culla suo figlio Chambers con il figlio del suo padrone Tom per dare al figlio l’opportunità di un riscatto dalla vita di schiavitù cui altrimenti sarebbe condannato. Lo scambio è reso possibile dal fatto che Roxana fosse una mulatta e la pelle di suo figlio ancora più bianca.
Così, Tom (in realtà Chambers) vivrà da ricco bianco, viziato e capriccioso, mentre il vero Tom (chiamato Chambers) vivrà da schiavo di colore. Questa condizione preparerà una serie di incidenti che porteranno poi Wilson a risolvere un crimine, l’assassinio dello zio del falso Tom, di cui sono stati accusati ingiustamente due gemelli arrivati nella cittadina di Dawson’s Landing creando molto scalpore per la loro somiglianza assoluta.
Il romanzo, con ironia, analizza la relazione bianco/nero descrivendo anche i soprusi della schiavitù, ma, al contempo opera un’analisi approfondita della facilità con cui le persone si lasciano deviare dai pregiudizi invece di usare l’intelligenza e la ragione per interpretare e comprendere la realtà.

It is a novel set in the 19th century in which the author shows all his literary ability characterized by the particular irony with which he observes the world around him and his inconsistencies.
The protagonist, Wilson, is nicknamed “Pudd’nhead ” after an unfortunate remark he uttered in public upon his arrival at Dawson’s Landing. In reality, his surname is Davis and he is a shrewd lawyer who will demonstrate all his investigative skills and his intelligence in spite of the nickname given to him for prejudice. Prejudices, as we know, often arise from the ignorance of those who build them and this seems to be the leitmotiv of the narrative.
Despite being the protagonist, Wilson appears to have a limited and subdued role in the narrative; only in the last part will he be recognized for his intelligence that he will conquer in the search for the truth beyond prejudice and any form of abuse.
In the wider part of the novel, the role of protagonists will be assumed by Roxana, a black slave who will exchange her son Chambers in the cradle with the son of her master Tom to give her son the opportunity for a ransom from the life of slavery which he would otherwise would be doomed. The exchange is made possible by the fact that Roxana was a mulatto and her son’s skin even whiter.
Thus, Tom (actually Chambers) will live as a rich, spoiled, capricious white man, while the real Tom (called Chambers) will live as a black slave. This condition will prepare a series of incidents which will then lead Wilson to solve a crime, the murder of the false Tom’s uncle, of which two twins who arrived in the town of Dawson’s Landing were wrongly accused, creating a stir for their absolute similarity.
The novel, with irony, analyzes the black/white relationship also describing the abuses of slavery, but at the same time carries out an in-depth analysis of the ease with which people allow themselves to be led astray by prejudices instead of using intelligence and reason to interpret and understand reality.
“Wilson lo svitato” (El Doctor Sax, 2018) by Mark Twain is a pleasant novel to read, which often causes a smile, but a novel of intense value and meaning.
