“Il sole sorgerà ancora” (ed. Clandestine, 2021) è il primo romanzo di Ernest Hemingway e fu pubblicato nel 1926. Più comunemente è conosciuto come “Fiesta” dal titolo che gli fu attribuito dalla prima pubblicazione in Inghilterra e in riferimento alla corrida cui i protagonisti del romanzo assistono a Pamplona, Spagna.
È la storia di un gruppo di giovani che, al termine della I guerra mondiale, si ritrovano a Parigi e decidono di fare insieme un viaggio in Spagna. Ciascuno dei protagonisti (Jake, giornalista e voce narrante; Robert, scrittore ebreo; Michael, promesso sposo di Brett; Brett, donna molto bella e richiesta ma profondamente sola; Frances, la futura moglie di Robert) vive un’esistenza apparentemente felice, ma interiormente devastata dalla guerra che su ciascuno lascia segni fisici o psicologici indelebili.
Il legame tra i personaggi è superficiale, così come le loro vite spese tra vino, donne e feste. È la rappresentazione del degrado di una società ricca ma profondamente individualista e sola nonostante l’ostentazione della ricchezza e dell’apparente felicità.
Il legame tra Brett e Jake è probabilmente il più profondo dei rappresentati, ma, nonostante l’autenticità dell’amore di Jake verso Brett e il suo ricambiarlo, è un legame reso impossibile dalla ferita di guerra di Jake che lo ha reso impotente.
Brett, pur se in procinto di sposare Michael non disdegna relazioni con altri uomini, persino con un diciannovenne torero incontrato alla corrida, ma resta una donna molto sola che trova rifugio solo nell’accoglienza di Jake.
Pamplona e la fiesta rappresentano motivo di apparente climax, il culmine di un’azione che poi dovrebbe dare origine a una conseguente conclusione, ma, invece, rappresenta sì la fine di un rapporto amicale, ma, in realtà conduce lentamente i personaggi al piunto di inizio in una specie di circolo vizione che tiene prigioniere azioni e pensieri.
C’è quel sole caldo nel cielo, ma nessuno sembra essersi accorto della sofferenza individuale dei personaggi che finiscono col mettersi l’uno contro l’altro, in realtà a nessuno interessa. L’illusione che tutto possa originare qualcosa di migliore è indicato dalle parole di Brett a Jake quando gli dice “Noi due saremmo stati così bene insieme”, ma la risposta, a mio parere illuminante di Jake è “Non è bello credere che sia così?”.
Una risposta illuminante perchè riporta da una parte alla consapevolezza dell’impossibilità di vivere fino in fondo la propria realtà, ma dall’altra lascia un profondo senso di vuoto nell’impossibilità e incapacità di ciascun personaggio di trovare una propria dimensione ricongiungendosi alla dimensione e alla vita degli altri.
Lo stile di Hemingway è quello che si rafforzerà nei romanzi successivi: eliminazione del superfluo, scarse descrizioni, molti dialoghi attraverso i quali i personaggi articolano la propria realtà ed essenza.

Although Brett is about to marry Michael, she does not disdain relationships with other men, even with a nineteen year old bullfighter she met at the bullfight, but she remains a very lonely woman who finds refuge only in welcoming Jake.
Pamplona and the fiesta represent a reason for an apparent climax, the culmination of an action that should then give rise to a consequent conclusion, but, instead, it does represent the end of a friendly relationship, but in reality it slowly leads the characters to the point of I begin in a kind of vicious circle that holds actions and thoughts captive.
There is that hot sun in the sky, but no one seems to have noticed the individual suffering of the characters who end up pitting each other, in reality nobody cares. The illusion that everything could give rise to something better is indicated by Brett’s words to Jake when he tells him “We two would have been so good together”, but Jake’s illuminating response in my opinion is “Isn’t it nice to believe this is so. ? “.
An enlightening answer because it brings back on the one hand the awareness of the impossibility of living one’s reality to the full, but on the other it leaves a profound sense of emptiness in the impossibility and inability of each character to find its own dimension by rejoining the dimension and the life of others.
