Il nuovo romanzo di Vincenza D’Esculapio, La tenuta dei melograni (Homo Scrivens, 2022), narra in due atti la storia avvincente di due donne, Brigida e Ginevra (sua madre) che, nella sofferenza e nell’inquietudine della propria storia personale, sapranno dare non solo un significato alla propria esistenza individuale, ma anche a quella di coloro che le affiancano, attraversano o semplicemente sfiorano la loro vita.
È un dialogo tra madre e figlia che si dischiude attraverso i diari della madre che per Brigida diventano non solo memoria, ma risorsa per trovare la forza e il coraggio di vivere la propria storia.
È una storia che, proprio come il melograno del titolo, racchiude un succo dolcissimo nonostante l’apparente durezza e asperità del frutto. Sembra quasi che l’autrice voglia suggerire di non arrendersi, di non smettere di operare affinché il bene prevalga, anche a costo del sacrificio personale.
È proprio quello che farà Ginevra, la madre, quando con suo marito Ruggero, uomo colto e intelligente e di casato nobile, sarà costretta a separarsi da Brigida per aiutare l’altro figlio, Tancredi.
Una separazione dolorosissima, resa ancora più dura dal sapore definitivo che può dare il mare che travolge e trascina.
Eppure, proprio grazie al coraggio della madre, Brigida potrà costruire per sé stessa un’esistenza di resistenza e perseveranza compiendo scelte atroci che, però, le consentiranno di dare valore alla sua vita e alla vita della sua creatura. Due atti e due scelte, quindi, quella di Ginevra prima e di Brigida in seguito. Due atti per raccontare vite che si abbracciano e continuano nel silenzio senza arrendersi, come spesso accade alle donne sole e isolate. Di rilievo la descrizione storica della nascita della Legione delle Pie Sorelle, antesignana di qualsiasi tentativo da parte delle donne di avere un ruolo pregnante nella società in cui vivono e che vogliono contribuire a modificare.
Il romanzo, ambientato tra la Sicilia (Palermo, poi Catania, poi Modica) e Napoli, si presenta con la struttura di un romanzo storico in cui eventi storici (gli eventi del 1848 con la fondazione della Legione delle Pie Sorelle), personaggi reali (la principessa di Butera, la poetessa Giuseppina Turrisi, intellettuali come Rosina Muzio Salvo), personaggi fittizi, incrociano le proprie vite a dimostrare che la storia è fatta dai più e che ha mille sfaccettature possibili.
L’abilità dell’autrice e la competenza storica sono molto efficaci ed evidenti, sebbene una scrittrice (o uno scrittore) difficilmente amino di essere chiusi in un genere letterario o l’altro.
A parte la ricostruzione storica, è interessante la narrazione “verosimile” di una storia possibile e di grande valore simbolico.
Un romanzo da assaporare e gustare e riflettere.

It is a dialogue between mother and daughter that unfolds through the mother’s diaries which for Brigida become not only a memory, but a resource to find the strength and courage to live her own story.
It is a story that, just like the pomegranate in the title, contains a very sweet juice despite the apparent hardness and roughness of the fruit. It almost seems that the author wants to suggest not to give up, not to stop working so that the good prevails, even at the cost of personal sacrifice.
This is exactly what Ginevra, her mother, will do when with her husband Ruggero, a cultured and intelligent man of noble lineage, she will be forced to separate from Brigida to help her other son, Tancredi.
A very painful separation, made even harder by the definitive flavor that the sea can give, which overwhelms and drags.
Yet, thanks to the courage of her mother, Brigida will be able to build for herself an existence of resistance and perseverance by making atrocious choices which, however, will allow her to give value to her life and to the life of her creature. Two acts and two choices, therefore, that of Ginevra first and Brigida afterwards. Two acts to tell about lives that embrace and continue in silence without giving up, as often happens to lonely and isolated women. Of importance is the historical description of the birth of the Legion of the Pious Sisters, the forerunner of any attempt by women to have a meaningful role in the society in which they live and which they want to contribute to change.
The novel, set between Sicily (Palermo, then Catania, then Modica) and Naples, presents itself with the structure of a historical novel in which historical events (the events of 1848 with the foundation of the Legion of the Pious Sisters), real characters ( the princess of Butera, the poet Giuseppina Turrisi, intellectuals such as Rosina Muzio Salvo), fictional characters, cross their lives to show that history is made up of most people and that it has a thousand possible facets.
The skill of the author and the historical competence are very effective and evident, although a writer (or a writer) hardly likes to be closed in one literary genre or the other.
Apart from the historical reconstruction, the “likely” narration of a possible story of great symbolic value is interesting.
A novel to savor and enjoy and reflect.
