“L’importanza di ogni parola” (Frassinelli, 2019) raccoglie molti dei discorsi, delle lezioni e delle conferenze tenute da Toni Morrison nel corso della sua vita ed è un compendio chiaro e accurato dell’evoluzione di un pensiero che, se ha il suo focus sulla relazione tra afroamericani e americani e sul loro posizionamento in una società “nata multipla e molteplice”, o anche sul ruolo delle donne nelle società contemporanee, ha di più il merito grande di una visione più ampia, non prettamente geografica ma universale sulle relazioni umane.
Il volume, diviso in due parti (I. La patria dello straniero, II. Il linguaggio di Dio) intervallate da un “Interludio” (Questioni nere), presenta a modo di Prefazione, un interessante discorso della Morrison tenuto nel 2008 a New York in occasione dell’accettazione del PEN/Borders Literary Service Award, intitolato “Pericolo”, che rappresenta una linea guida del pensiero della scrittrice, professoressa, donna di grande umanità e di ampio sguardo.
“Pericolo” diventa anche un monito contro le dittature e una rotta per tutti gli scrittori perché la “parola” ha la funzione sociale non di assecondare il male, ma di indicarne l’esistenza affinché possa essere affrontato e superato in favore della pace.
L’intero volume, ogni discorso, merita attenzione poiché effettivamente la Morrison usa le parole per svelare a tutti i propri pensieri nascosti affinché ciascuno possa riconoscere chi è e procedere a un miglioramento di sé.
Non c’è mai odio nelle sue parole, neanche quando racconta delle discriminazioni, solo la constatazione che ciascuno, lungo la linea del colore che divide, deve trovare il coraggio di riconoscersi nell’altro senza necessità di dare dimostrazioni di sé, ma vivendo onestamente e profondamente il proprio comune quotidiano.
L’invito della Morrison agli afroamericani, ripetuto in più di uno dei suoi discorsi, è alla consapevolezza di sé, al coraggio di essere e restare sé stessi senza modificare le proprie radici, ma anzi rendendole più forti affinché possano essere riconoscibili e riconosciute, affinché la voce della propria storia sia ascoltata nella sua verità senza interpretazioni e deviazioni volute da chi non vuole riconoscere nell’altro la sua stessa storia.
