Yet, writing is not about indulging the reader’s taste in order to take advantage of it and leave him a prisoner of his own certainties (when it goes well), of his disinterest (when it goes wrong). Writing is shaking, bearing witness to reality, also upsetting, but never flattening. Writing is not a kind of complacency in which to find oneself “sold” and therefore important, writing is intellectual honesty and sincere participation in life and lives.

Eppure, scrivere non è assecondare il gusto del lettore per trarne il proprio vantaggio e lasciarlo prigioniero delle proprie certezze (quando va bene), del proprio disinteresse (quando va male). Scrivere è scuotere, testimoniare la realtà, sconvolgere anche, ma appiattire mai. Scrivere non è una sorta di autocompiacimento in cui ritrovarsi “venduti” e quindi importanti, scrivere è onestà intellettuale e partecipazione sincera alla vita e alle vite.
