Then I ask myself, without pretension or presumption to educate someone, but really the role of a writer in our society is to satisfy the tastes and give people what they like? I don’t know, but this seems to me more of a personal, if not economic, narcissistic gain. All writers would like to be read, even I certainly am not exempt from this desire. Yet, I would like to be read not because I satisfy the tastes, but because I open a dialogue, maybe even arouse dissent, but that is an opportunity to think. Maybe that’s why I’m not a “great” writer, in the sense of super famous. I believe that, without pride and without presumption, writers, like any intellectual, should question themselves about their social role. Really, today, in the society of “pleasure” and “everything is allowed as long as I like it”, is this the role of the writer? I don’t know, it’s not for me for sure, maybe that’s why I’m less read than others, but if being read means giving up my intellectual honesty and that possibility of building new dialogues, I’ll gladly go further. Sorry, but I just can’t think of a book as a cheap consumer product and, when I write, I always think the reader deserves more than usual, than what he thinks he wants because the market has so educated him. I think the reader is a free mind capable of wandering about in reading, but also of seeking comparison and reflection. Every reader has this possibility and his fidelity should never be betrayed by responding to requests without ever pushing them a step beyond in order to discover himself and his thoughts.

Io poi mi domando, senza pretesa né presunzione di educare qualcuno, ma davvero il ruolo di uno scrittore nella nostra società è quello di assecondare i gusti e dare alle persone quello che piace loro? Non so, ma questo mi sembra più un tornaconto personale, se non economico, narcisista. Tutti gli scrittori vorrebbero essere letti, anche io di certo non sono esente da questo desiderio. Eppure, vorrei essere letta non perché accontento i gusti, ma perché apro un dialogo, magari suscito anche il dissenso, ma che sia un’occasione per pensare. Forse è per questo che non sono una “grande” scrittrice, nel senso di super nota. Credo che, senza superbia e senza presunzione, gli scrittori, come ogni intellettuale, dovrebbero interrogarsi sul loro ruolo sociale. Davvero, oggi, nella società del “piacere” e del “tutto è consentito purché mi piaccia”, è questo il ruolo di chi scrive? Non lo so, non lo è per me di certo, forse è per questo che sono meno letta di altri, ma se essere letti comporta rinunciare alla propria onestà intellettuale e a quella possibilità di costruire dialoghi nuovi, passo oltre volentieri. Scusate, ma proprio non riesco a pensare a un libro come a un prodotto di consumo dozzinale e, quando scrivo, penso sempre che il lettore merita più del consueto, di quello che crede di volere perché il mercato lo ha così istruito. Penso che il lettore sia una mente libera in grado di divagarsi nella lettura, ma anche di cercare confronto e riflessione. Ogni lettore ha questa possibilità e la sua fedeltà non dovrebbe mai essere tradita rispondendo alle richieste senza spingerle mai un passo oltre alla scoperta di sé stesso e del suo pensiero.
