Dante (LaTerza, 2020) di Alessandro Barbero è un libro che definirei “onesto” nel tentativo di ridare forma a una biografia di Dante Alighieri spesso ricca di vuoti e tratti che sono rimasti oscuri.

“Onesto” perché l’autore tratteggia il ritratto di Dante senza nascondere i vuoti e senza cercare di colmarli con interpretazioni personali e personificazioni di immaginari possibili.

Quello di Barbero è il lavoro dello storico, una ricostruzione meticolosa e attenta che non teme i tratti che restano ignoti e che, invece di lasciare spazio all’invenzione, dà spazio e voce all’intuizione dettata dallo stile di vita e dalla storia esatta e certificata dei luoghi danteschi.

Forse, quello che attrae di più in questo libro è proprio la dignità onesta della narrazione e la ricostruzione storica di un personaggio come Dante che, altrimenti, rischia di alimentare finzioni e fantasie. Il testo, infatti, più che narrare la storia di un uomo, sembra raccontare la storia di un’epoca nella quale un uomo, Dante, ha trascorso il suo tempo tra impegno politico, culturale, umano lasciando che quella particolare epoca non solo ne attraversasse il pensiero, ma, attraverso di esso, ne raccontasse.

Il libro non spiega e non rivela di Dante tutto ciò che non si conosce, non imprime all’opera dantesca il marchio di “definitivo”, ma lascia aperte molte porte a nuove ricerche ed interpretazioni. Dante appare ancora come una figura in qualche modo “sfuggente” nel senso di non completamente determinabile e questo, se da una parte accresce l’interesse e la curiosità sul personaggio e sulle sue opere, dall’altra ne immortala l’eternità.

Dante (LaTerza, 2020) by Alessandro Barbero is a book that I would define as “honest” in an attempt to give shape to a biography of Dante Alighieri often full of gaps and traits that have remained obscure. “Honest” because the author outlines Dante’s portrait without hiding the gaps and without trying to fill them with personal interpretations and personifications of possible imaginaries. Barbero’s is the work of the historian, a meticulous and careful reconstruction that does not fear the traits that remain unknown and that, instead of leaving room for invention, gives space and voice to the intuition dictated by the lifestyle and the exact history and certified by Dante’s places. Perhaps, what attracts the most in this book is the honest dignity of the narration and the historical reconstruction of a character like Dante who, otherwise, risks feeding fictions and fantasies. The text, in fact, rather than narrating the story of a man, seems to tell the story of an era in which a man, Dante, spent his time between political, cultural and human commitment, letting that particular era not only pass through thought, but, through it, he told about it. The book does not explain and does not reveal everything that is unknown about Dante, it does not give the Dante’s work the “definitive” mark, but leaves many doors open to new research and interpretations. Dante still appears as a somewhat “elusive” figure in the sense of not completely determinable and this, if on the one hand it increases the interest and curiosity about the character and his works, on the other it immortalizes his eternity.
