Il romanzo di Tara Westover, L’educazione (Feltrinelli, 2018), è un romanzo davvero molto interessante e accattivante grazie al quale è immediato il riconoscimento di un valore e significato che vanno oltre lo specifico campo di narrazione (il mormonismo esasperato) per attraversare una verità che diventa universale: qualsiasi bambino che cresca in una famiglia violenta e/o che abbia poca cura per la formazione dei piccoli, è un bambino che soffre per esistere e il cui futuro può fare affidamento solo sull’educazione per sconfiggere i fantasmi del passato e liberare le capacità nascoste.
È questo il viaggio di Tara, perché è come un viaggio attraverso la sua crescita che il romanzo si configura. Le tre parti, infatti, possono ben rappresentare tre fasi della vita: infanzia, adolescenza, età adulta; esse, però, possono anche ben rappresentare tre momenti dell’evoluzione interiore della protagonista: imitazione, frustrazione, liberazione.
Tara percorre momenti di inconsapevole imitazione come di inconsapevole rifiuto, colpevole ribellione come colpevole soggezione o assoggettamento, ma mai, fino a quando grazie allo studio riuscirà a incontrare prima se stessa e poi gli altri, la sua consapevolezza sarà in grado di farla scegliere. Quando comincia a studiare opponendosi al dictat del padre e della madre sua succube, la prima difficoltà, oltre lo studio in sé, sarà l’incontro con gli altri, così diversi dalla propria esperienza, eppure, non sarà in grado di affiancarsi a loro fino a quando non riuscirà a capire chi è lei e che cosa vuole davvero, fino a quando non potrà ribellarsi fino in fondo e lasciare che la vera Tara, la nuova Tara, possa ricongiugere il se stessa bambina con quello dell’adolescente e poi della donna che è diventata.
L’incontro e il riconoscimento con e di se stessa porterà Tara a lasciarsi conoscere dagli altri e, così, permetterà loro di entrare nella sua vita mentre lei stessa impara a lasciarsi andare. L’isolamento, la paura della vendetta, tutto sarà superabile solo grazie all’educazione, alla conoscenza, alla ricerca di un io reale che sa resistere all’assoggettamento e riconoscere la propria libertà.
L’educazione di Tara Westover è un romanzo che sottolinea con forza l’importanza dell’educazione, il valore della conoscenza, la necessità di imparare per superare il vuoto interiore e imparare anche a riconoscersi negli altri come realtà reali e non solo possibili. Lo consiglio decisamente.

The novel by Tara Westover, L’educazione ( Feltrinelli, 2028), is a really very interesting and captivating novel thanks to which the recognition of a value and meaning that goes beyond the specific field of narration (exasperated Mormonism) is immediate to cross a truth that becomes universal: any child who grows up in a violent family and / or who has little care for the formation of the little ones, is a child who suffers to exist and whose future can only rely on education to defeat the ghosts of the past and free hidden abilities. This is Tara’s journey, because it is like a journey through her growth that the novel takes shape. The three parts, in fact, can well represent three phases of life: childhood, adolescence, adulthood; however, they can also represent three moments of the protagonist’s inner evolution: imitation, frustration, liberation. Tara goes through moments of unconscious imitation as of unconscious refusal, guilty rebellion as guilty subjection or subjugation, but never, until thanks to the study she will be able to meet first herself and then the others, her awareness will be able to make her choose. When she begins to study opposing the dictate of her father and mother, the first difficulty, beyond the study itself, will be the encounter with others, so different from her own experience, yet she will not be able to join them until until she will be able to understand who she is and what she really wants, until she can rebel to the end and let the real Tara, the new Tara, be able to reunite herself as a child with that of the teenager and then of the woman that she has become. The encounter and recognition with and of herself will lead Tara to let herself be known by others and, thus, will allow them to enter her life as she herself learns to let go. Isolation, the fear of revenge, everything will be overcome only thanks to education, knowledge, the search for a real self that can resist subjugation and recognize its own freedom. L’educazione by Tara Westover is a novel that strongly underlines the importance of education, the value of knowledge, the need to learn to overcome the inner emptiness and also learn to recognize oneself in others as real and not only possible realities. I definitely recommend it.
