Il libro di Cheikh Tidiane Gaye, Prendi quello che vuoi, ma lasciami la mia pelle nera (Jaca Book, 2013) con prefazione curata da Giuliano Pisapia, è un viaggio dentro e attraverso la consapevolezza di se stessi e della diversità come valore attraverso cui amare la propria unicità e offrirla come occasione di reciproco confronto e crescita.

L’autore, grazie a una raccolta di lettere/diario indirizzate all’amico di infanzia Silmakha lascia che la voce narrante del racconto, Souleymane, possibile alter ego dello stesso autore, narri del suo incontro e delle difficoltà di vivere in un paese, l’Italia, che non ha superato le sue forme di discriminazione e razzismo.

Souleymane è un giovane senegalese che sceglie di lasciare la sua Africa, il suo Senegal, consapevole delle difficoltà di affermazione professionale nel suo paese. Arriva in Italia in condizioni diverse rispetto ai tanti migranti che rischiano la vita per seguire l’obiettivo di costruire la speranza per il proprio futuro, ma si scontra, comunque, con forme di razzismo e di esclusione. Quando ritornerà a casa, in Senegal, per un grave lutto che colpirà la sua famiglia, si troverà a scegliere se ritornare o meno in Italia; una scelta obbligata per sostenere ciò che resta della sua famiglia, ma anche la scelta consapevole di chi non rinnega la propria identità, ma anzi, proprio affermando la stessa senza rifiutare quella degli altri, scopre una possibilità per tutti gli esseri umani di rinascere come popolo nuovo.

La narrazione è serrata, si trasforma in un dialogo con se stessi e, come in un flusso di coscienza, riporta a galla la verità di ciascun essere umano: non esistono altre razze se non quella umana. È su questo punto, fondamentale e imprescindibile, che si può costruire una società di pace e di dialogo, è su questo punto che le tradizioni, la cultura, la fede si trasformano nell’abbraccio unitario e collettivo di una umanità che può e deve essere riscoperta.

Il linguaggio, è molto intenso, profondo, poetico. Le parole si trasformano in emozioni e immagini che si scolpiscono nel cuore e nel senno di chi desidera fare un passo oltre il vuoto di evoluzione culturale che vede differenze lì dove non ci sono che esseri umani. Difatti, come scrive l’autore, universalizzare le culture non significa certamente negarne la singolarità. (…) il «diverso» deve essere visto come fonte inesauribile e indispensabile, non come una minaccia. Che l’uomo porti la fiamma dell’uguaglianza, e conclude rivolgendosi in un messaggio al figlio mulatto, non odiare perché tu sei «perdono».

The author, thanks to a collection of letters / diary addressed to his childhood friend Silmakha, lets the narrator of the story, Souleymane, a possible alter ego of the same author, narrate his encounter and the difficulties of living in a country, Italy, which has not overcome its forms of discrimination and racism.

Souleymane is a young Senegalese who chooses to leave his Africa, his Senegal, aware of the difficulties of professional affirmation in his country. He arrives in Italy in different conditions than the many migrants who risk their lives to pursue the goal of building hope for their future, but nevertheless clashes with forms of racism and exclusion. When he returns home to Senegal due to a serious bereavement that will hit his family, he will have to choose whether or not to return to Italy; an obligatory choice to support what remains of his family, but also the conscious choice of those who do not deny their own identity, but rather, by affirming the same without rejecting that of others, discovers a possibility for all human beings to be reborn as a people new.

The narrative is tight, it transforms itself into a dialogue with oneself and, as in a stream of consciousness, it brings to the surface the truth of each human being: there are no races other than the human one. It is on this point, fundamental and essential, that a society of peace and dialogue can be built, it is on this point that traditions, culture, faith are transformed into the unitary and collective embrace of a humanity that can and must be rediscovery.

The language is very intense, deep, poetic. Words are transformed into emotions and images that are carved in the heart and in the sense of those who want to take a step beyond the void of cultural evolution that sees differences where there are only human beings. In fact, as the author writes, universalizing cultures certainly does not mean denying their singularity. (…) the “different” must be seen as an inexhaustible and indispensable source, not as a threat. May man carry the flame of equality, and concludes by addressing his mulatto son in a message, do not hate because you are “forgiveness”.
